The “Blue Cube” is a 24 ft. x 24 ft. x 24 ft.
structure located within the Ocean
Explorium in New Bedford, MA.
The cube holds a 5 ft. diameter white ball
which is suspended within the center of
the cube. Four special cameras light the
ball to depict a three dimensional view of
the Earth. They can show optional features
such as ocean and wind currents.
The museum wanted the cube to be
lighted from within and to glow. Therefore,
they asked for minimum steel
structural elements (which could cause
shadows). EXTECH designed and
erected a lace-like structure by setting bar
joists on their ends and calling them
‘columns’ and then clad them with our
Series #3440 tongue & groove panels
(blue in color) laid horizontally.
