Finally, windows, doors and skylights must undergo testing for air and water infiltration. The water resistance standard is very high. There can be no water infiltration when the test specimen is sprayed with water for 15 minutes and, simultaneously, a vacuum equal to 16 percent of the design pressure is attempting to suck the water through the test specimen.
New Designs
Manufacturers are now challenged to design products that meet the new codes, even at the extremely high design pressures required by ASCE-7 (The American Society of Civil Engineers standard for wind pressures, which has been adopted throughout most of the Southeast). This standard can dictate design pressures of more than 200 psf (30 or 40 psf is common in most of the nation) for high coastal buildings.
